Jaw-dropping images of Pluto were captured in July when New Horizons zoomed past the dwarf planet (see left). But the mission left some puzzles too. In the months since we have found possible ice volcanoes, strange blue skies and hints of windswept dunes and glacier-carved valleys. Other regions, like the strangely uncratered area to the west of Pluto's "heart", still defy easy explanation. Bursts of radio waves have been seen flashing across the sky since 2001. They seem to follow a mathematical pattern so either some strange celestial physics is going on or, as was suggested in March, the bursts are artificial, produced by technology -human or alien. No one knows what causes them, but the brevity of the bursts means the source is small, so they can't be from ordinary stars.
