From natural wonder of the world to rubbish dump. Australia will tip millions of tonnes of sludge into Great Barrier Reef waters so that it can export more coal. And that's just the beginning. The Abbot Point port in north Queensland is being expanded so that coal can be shipped from the Galilee basin. Conservationists pleaded for the 5 million tonnes of soil and sediment that will be dredged to be dumped elsewhere. But on 31 January, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority approved plans to use the park. A letter signed by 230 scientists warned of "detrimental effects on the Great Barrier Reef". The sediment may smother seagrasses and corals, threatening animals like dugongs that depend on them. But the government says strict conditions mean water quality will improve 150 per cent. The scientists disagree. "That sounds ridiculous," says Selina Ward of the University of Queensland. She says 360,000 tonnes of sediment has been removed in the last two years. Another 5 million tonnes would require a huge effort.
