Life imitates arcade game. The flying snakes of South-East Asia flatten their cylindrical bodies when they glide - in cross-section, they are shaped like flying saucers from the classic Space Invaders game The surprise is that this is extremely aerodynamic. Jake Socha of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and his colleagues created a model of a mid-body slice of a paradise tree snake, and placed it in a tank filled with flowing water. This allowed them to model how air would flow around it. The flying saucer shape was much more aerodynamic than Socha expected, producing forces that, in air, would allow it to maintain near-maximum lift. In fact, it outperformed conventional aerofoil designs, such as those used for aircraft wings.
