An infrared camera that could give pilots 10 minutes notice of an encroaching volcanic ash cloud began its first flight tests around mount Etna in Sicily this week. The technology is designed to save airlines money, following the millions lost when planes were grounded during the Icelandic volcanic ash crisis of 2010. Developed by atmospheric physicist Fred Prata at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, the Airborne Volcanic Object Imaging Detector (AVOID) is a digital camera that is tuned to two characteristic infrared wavelengths emitted by stl icate-rich ash. And with Etna currently emitting plumes of ash, it's the perfect time to test.
