You might not expect to find much long-lasting ice on Mars beyond its polar regions, yet radar observations have now revealed huge amounts of the stuff hidden in its mid-latitudes.rnJohn Holt at the University of Texas at Austin and colleagues found that vast tracts of such ice in both hemispheres have been shielded from the sun by fields of rocky debris estimated at less than 10 metres thick. In the planet's Hellas basin alone, they found 28,000 cubic kilometres of water ice - enough to coat Mars with a layer of water 20 centimetres thick (Science, vol 322, p 1235).rnThe glaciers probably formed when the planet's rotational axis was different, says co-author James Head of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
