Hopes are running high. Last week, patients started calling a lab in the UK to ask about stem cell treatments, after scientists there announced they had cloned a human embryo in an attempt to create embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Never mind that the attempt failed. One team has succeeded, of course. Woo Suk Hwang from South Korea and his colleagues produced 11 ESC lines containing DNA from adult cells taken from patients. Their work proves beyond doubt that therapeutic cloning can be used to produce ESCs that are a genetic match for people of any age or sex. Less than nine years after the birth of the first cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep, this is an amazing achievement.
