摘要

Scott Hubbard: Today, we are delighted to have four members of the commercial remote sensing industry here with us. Remote sensing is something that has been done by governments for many years, starting first for national security. Many people think that the origin of the whole UFO industry started with the crash of Project Corona, which is one of the very first attempts to use spy-satellite-type imagery out in the U.S. desert. And then later on for land use and climate change, also government, but with the advent of a program called LANDSAT, there began to be available commercial imagery. However, the business model, since it came from the government, was send in your money and then a month later we will send you an 8×10 glossy picture of the thing you wanted. This did not really lend itself to the growth of an industry as everybody hoped that it would. However, eventually, it was discovered that if you make that data free, then people will use that data and start to create other types of products from it. I was at a meeting in Geneva back in November that had several members there from the European Union commercial remote sensing operation. They said it was not the data itself that was monetized. It was the products that came from the data and the utilization of the data that people really were seeing, at least in Europe, some commercial traction. So today what we have is a very, very interesting situation where in addition to the legacy programs like LANDSAT and one of the big players, Digital Globe, having merged with or bought their competitor, producing spacecraft built by Ball Aerospace called World View that provides very, very high-resolution imagery, we have new startups, Skybox, Urthecast, and Dauria, and we have a legacy company, SSL (previously Space Systems/Loral), producing the spacecraft that are going to be part of this as well. So what I would like to do now is to go in turn to the people we have here today. Let us start here with Dan Lopez and Urthecast. Tell us about who you are and your venture and where you think you are headed.
