A forest fire in the region of the Hammer head forestry office, Brandenburg, in June 2000 led to a mass multiplication of the pine sawyer beetle Monochamus galloprovincialis, using damaged trees, cut wood and felling debris as breeding sites. This beetle is known to be a vector for the quarantine nema-tode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and the closely related species Bursaphelenchus mucronatus (Nematoda, Parasitaphe-lenchidae). A year after the forest fire, 46 beetles were collected and investigated for the presence of dauer juveniles of wood inhabiting nematodes. Dauer juveniles were found on 66 % of the beetles, ranging from seven to 40 000 per beetle (mean 3 608). The mode value was nine dauer juveniles per beetle. The beetles, which carried dauer juveniles, were grouped into common logarithmic classes based on the number of dauer juveniles carried per beetle. The class with the highest number of beetles was 11 to 100 dauer juveniles, the second largest class was 1 to 10 dauer juveniles. Rearing of the dauer juveniles on Botrytis cinerea revealed the presence of two species. B. mucronatus developed in most cases, whereas Diplogasteroides haslacheri was present on one beetle. A comparison of the statistical results on the presence of B. mucronatus in this study with statistical data on the number of B. mucronatus on M. galloprovincialis and M. sutor in Scandinavia and the number of B. xylophilus on M. galloprovincialis in Portugal revealed similarities. The distribution pattern may be described as positively skewed and, therefore, the arithmetical mean is not a suitable measure for representing the load of dauer juveniles carried by the beetles. The typical number of dauer juveniles per beetle was represented by a median of approximately 60 (59.5). Numbers of dauer juveniles per beetle of several thousands are more seldom. An experiment was conducted to attempt to transmit dauer juveniles during maturation feeding by three males and three females of newly hatched M. galloprovincialis which were caged on 4-year-old Pinus sylvestris plants; despite the fact that all six insects fed on shoots for one week, no nematodes could subsequently be found in the pine plants.
