摘要

Since its introduction to North America approximately 45 years ago, the fungus causing butternut canker, Sirococcus clavigig-nenti-juglandacearum Nair, Kostichka & Kuntz (Deuteromyco-tina, Coelomycetes), has led to the extensive destruction of Butternut (Juglans cinerea L.) in its native host range. The fungus causes perennial branch and trunk cankers which can completely encircle the cambium and kill the host. It is one of the few tree pathogens which can spread via infected seeds. Sirococcus cla-vigignenti-juglandacearum is not present in Europe yet, but the Walnut species cultivated here, Juglans regia L. and J. nigra L, are also susceptible and would be seriously endangered should the fungus be introduced. The article presents extensive information from literature on the disease, its symptoms, diagnostic characteristics, the history of its spread in North America, possible control measures and on the European, especially German, aspects of Walnut cultivation.
