The number of scientists of the Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry from 1992-96 increased slightly for those that were core-funded and slightly decreased for those paid by extra core funds. The long term scientists (corefunds) in 1996 comprised 22% females and 78% males. On the basis of qualifications, 37.3% originated from agriculture and horticulture, 1.4% from forestry, 32.5% from biology, 17.5% from chemistry, 4.8% from engineering, 2.9% from mathematics and informatics, and 3.9% from other areas. The average number of Ph.D. candidates during this period comprised 44 females and 43 males/year, of which 33% qualified in the agricultural/horticultural sciences, 56% in biological sciences and 11% in others. During 1994-96 the Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry was able to employ 21 scientists either on a temporary or permanent basis. Of these, 38% had an agricultural sciences background and 33% were from the biological sciences.
