Net blotch lesions on barley, caused by D. teres [Pyrenophora teres], exhibited high variability in the field, leading to confusion in differentiating net blotch from other barley diseases or physiological leaf spots. The appearance of net blotch lesions is described and illustrated, and is compared with other disease symptoms including those caused by D. graminea [P. graminea], Bipolaris sorokiniana [Cochliobolus sativus], Rhynchosporium secalis, Erysiphe graminis, Ascochyta hordei and Ramularia collo-cygni.
