From the beginningof the Honduran crisis, the Obama administra-tion painted itself into a corner. It rightly condemned the June 28 coup d'etat that overthrew President Manuel Zelaya. But it wrongly insisted on Zelaya's immediate restoration, failing to acknowledge that the best solution was to ensure that the already scheduled elections for Nov. 29 be as free and fair as possible. Those elections ended up being far from perfect, with restrictions on the press and Zelaya himself under virtual house arrest. Nonetheless, the fundamental conditions of legitimacy were met, and the defeated candidates all accepted the victory of Porfirio Lobo. The regional response is more divided, with some countries refusing to recognize the results.
