In the first six months of 1995, the electronics industry, the country's fastest growing sector, both in terms of investments and exports clocked up a resounding US$3.2 billion export total, 52 percent over the same period last year. This figure excludes Japan. The industry's growth targets as from 1994 started at 38 percent, in 1995, an unprecedented rise of 52 percent brought great expectations in the trade. The first half of 1995 overshot the year's target by 30 percent. However, the trade looks at a more steady growth of 20 percent a year. Francisco Ferrer, President of the Semiconductor Electronics Industry Foundation, Inc. or better known in the trade as SFJFI says, "The existing companies are expanding, new players are coming in, and nobody is leaving. "The electronics industry in the Philippines is divided into four categories - consumer electronics; telecommunications equipment; computer and related equipment; and finally components and devices, and semiconductors. There are over 40 leading companies that dominate Philippine exports.
