As Japan's death count climbed and the toll of physical destruction became evident, everyday images were transformed Into reminders of loss. A photograph of a father and son washed ashore with debris in Natori, Mlyagl prefecture, a city near the epicenter of devastation that has been all but wiped off the face of the earth. Some parts of the nearby coastline were so heavily buried that rescue teams brought dogs to sniff the mud-hoping to locate a survivor, though finding only bodies.
