摘要

Back in the chilliest days of the cold war, be-fore outsiders bad any access to the Soviet Union, there was a thriving school of analysts called "Sovietologists." They would painstakingly explain to American readers the meaning of each sudden change in the party leadership and what it boded for the future. All we would have known before was that one fat, sinister-looking guy in a medal-heavy-uniform had been replaced in the official photographs by another who looked even less promising. But the Sovietologist, working from special emigre insights, arcane statistics on agricultural production and so forth, could tell you why one guy had been bounced, why the other had been named to replace him and what was therefore bound to come next. I have no doubt that some of them were fairly reliable. But more of them were hot, and this certainly included a man who appeared in the magazine I then worked for, who seemed invariably to be not just completely wrong, but spectacularly wrong.
