When the terror faded a bit, the boredom set in. The 74 hostages who were still held at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima, Peru, last week found time passing with excruciating slowness. There wasn't much to read, apart from a karaoke songbook, a Japanese-language edition of NEWSWEEK and an all too tempting book on French cuisine. "We liked to drool over the pictures while we were eating our scraps of bread," said Toshiro Konishi, a Peruvian restaurateur of Japanese descent, who was released five days after Marxist guerrillas took over the villa on Dec. 17.
