摘要

Stainless steel came to be used in automobiles to meet the social needs for clean exhaust gases and reduced weight for better fuel economy. The consumption of stainless steel for automotive use has almost quadrupled in the past decade. Stainless steel is used for the most part as material for the exhaust system. Type 409 was the original choice, but various other types of high-performance stainless steels are now used in the automobile exhaust system. This paper describes the past changes and future prospect of materials used for specific automotive exhaust system pans, namely, the gasket, manifold, front pipe, flexible pipe, metal catalyst carrier, and muffler.
