Between the 1920s and the 1960s a rigid Watsonian behaviourism was taught in many psychology schools in the English-speaking countries, and one did not mention consciousness or introspection. I personally remember it as an undergraduate in London around 1953. Psychophysics, which continued to be respectable, was interpreted as being only linked between physical stimulus properties and choice decisions recorded by motor or verbal responses.
