摘要

Once we acknowledge living in a complex world, it follows that we need to reflect on our pre-conceived notions about how reality works and rethink the way we do science. This book offers a thoughtful appreciation of this challenge. The author notes that established scientific practices (normal science) trivialize complex phenomena through reductionist methodologies: objects and agents are removed from their systemic context, observations are frozen in time, and unidirectional cause and effect relationships are assumed without feedback processes. The imposition of these paradigmatic limitations, it is argued, marks a crisis in our scientific thinking because it results in an incomplete understanding of our surroundings.
