This article discusses the practical utilization of airlaid absorbent material as a diaper core. It begins with a review of the history and a study of publications concerning airlaid technology. This review was somewhat overwhelming; the volume of material on a technology in its 40s is amazing, having thoroughly permeated the disposables industry literature for well over the past decade. When discussing airlaid materials, I mean engineered web-materials, slit to the application width. These materials typically include fiberized pine pulp, superabsorbent polymers in powdered or granule form and some type of binder, either latex or thermal fibers. They are formed in such a way as to produce a general tissue- or fabric-like top and bottom layer with the superabsorbent material suspended in a central fiber matrix. As engineered products, there are numerous variations of this general scheme, including multiple and alternating layers, different fiber types and lengths, different SAP type and granule size, different thickness and densities, and even nonwoven fabric layers included in the structural matrix.
