摘要

Meltblown microfibers, alone or in combination with other fibrous materials, have been used for several decades to produce filter media and other health care products for improved consumer health and safety. To date, the normal range of fiber sizes attainable for filtration purposes with the best available meltblowing equipment has generally been in the 2-5 micron range. Since increased surface area and smaller average pore size are generally directly related to average fiber size for a given substrate, considerable R&D has been done by equipment manufacturers, meltblown producers and academia to produce ultrafine fibers (<1 micron) and nanofibers (0.001 microns) at commercially acceptable rates and yields. This article discusses the current work underway to achieve this objective utilizing three different processes: modified meltblowing, splittable fiber and electrospinning.
