The surface micro structure of coating layers, drawn down from aqueous polystyrene (PS) suspensions on polyester substrates, was investigated. The effects of three different water-soluble thickeners, carboxymethyl cellulose, poly(vinyl alcohol) and an alkali-swellable emulsion, were compared. Each of the thickeners was investigated at three different concentrations. An Atomic Force Microscope was used to investigate the surface structure of the coating layers. The surface structure was interpreted by calculating the pair distribution function, g(r), where r is the radius of a ring centered at a particle. The colloidal stability of the PS suspensions was also investigated. The apparent viscosity and the aqueous phase viscosity were measured in order to elucidate the colloidal stability and degree of flocculation. The suspensions containing the alkali-swellable emulsion had the highest viscosity. The coating layers containing the alkali-swellable emulsion showed the lowest degree of order in the surface layer. Rheological investigation showed that the suspension containing the alkali-swellable emulsion possessed the most solid-like behavior in terms of long relaxation times. A pronounced liquid-like behavior promoted ordered surface structures, while the correlation between storage modulus and surface structure was less apparent. Quite a good correlation was observed between the surface micros-tructure and the amount of polymer added, despite the fact that the different thickeners destabilized the suspensions by different mechanisms. The surface microstructure seemed to be strongly affected by the concentration of water-soluble polymer in the aqueous phase of the wet coating during the course of the consolidation (drying).
