A few months ago hooking together microphones and computers to place telephone calls over the Internet was no more than a hobby for hackers with time on their hands. But now, Internet telephony looks like it's ready to offer a serious money-saving business opportunity. In recent weeks high-tech giants Microsoft and Intel both introduced net-telephony products. Essentially it works like this. Pay your flat monthly fee for unlimited Internet access, add some software and technical expertise and you can use your multimedia computer to make "free long distance calls." You can call and stay on-line for as long as you like with anybody in the world who uses compatible software.
