The problems facing the environment from climate change cannot be considered in a vacuum away from the challenges facing the United States on energy security, according to a new report issued by two Washington, D.C. think tanks last week. The report, "A Roadmap for a Secure, Low-Carbon Energy Economy," offers a number of specific recommendations for the Obama Administration to get started addressing these issues, as well as others pertaining to a larger framework. The report's authors, experts from both the Center for Strategic International Studies and the World Resources Institute, envision a strong role for the federal government in tackling these challenges, but also noted the importance of maintaining energy supplies while it moves toward a low-carbon future. The U.S. needs to "reset the system," of energy in this country, but at the same time, "manage the transition" by taking a realistic approach toward current low-carbon fuels and emissions reductions that are possible in the short term, according to the preview of the report offered last week.
