Chalk River Laboratories: A global hub for nuclear science and technology

Since the inception of the nuclear industry in the 1940s, Canada has "punched above its weight." The nation's storied Chalk River Laboratories has proven its mettle time and again in the delivery of novel and advanced nuclear science and technology. That legacy of innovation continues and has been renewed with the introduction of an ambitious new vision and long-term strategy. Since 2015, Chalk River Laboratories has been managed under a government-owned, contractor-operated (GOCO) model. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is responsible for the management and operation of the site, while the government of Canada, through Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), the federal Crown corporation that had operated the labs in the decades prior, remains the owner, providing oversight and general direction. Learning from the strengths of similar transitions elsewhere, AECL identified and adopted principles from both the U.S. and U.K. GOCO models while still creating a "made in Canada" solution. This change to a GOCO model presented an opportunity to revisit how the expertise and facilities at Chalk River were being leveraged to strengthen connections with both industry and government and to rebuild the science and technology program to align with Canada's needs and those of the broader nuclear industry.
