In a foreword to the report on the latest Energy Review, U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair made clear his basic support for nuclear power. "Neither renewable energy nor greater energy efficiency can provide the complete solution to the shortfall we face. This will depend on ... new nuclear power stations to replace those becoming obsolete," he said. In the report, Our Energy Challenge: Securing Clean, Affordable Energy for the Long-term, published on July 11, the prime minister also stressed that energy security required ensuring supplies from abroad and replacing older coal-fired stations, as well as nuclear plants.
