Through unprecedented coordination and dedication of individuals and teams from Federal, State and private partners, the survey response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita was quick and effective given the assets at hand and the hurdles to overcome. The initial emergency response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita spanned approximately six weeks. Over 590 miles of channels were surveyed by NOAA assets from Pensacola, Florida to Texas City, Texas (Figure 6). NOAA's tertiary support to the States and local communities in their rebuilding and recovery efforts is still ongoing. From this experience, NOAA's Office of Coast Survey will be better prepared to work with partners to facilitate emergency response efforts and recovery of local communities and national interests.
