Ecosystem size: The relative size of an ecosystem in terms of the production rates of major functional groups. FOOTPRINT: The relative importance of a group as a consumer expressed as the energy demand of the consumer upon one or more producers. A consumer may have a footprint upon a producer even if it does not directly prey upon that producer. A commonly encountered footprint in the literature is the "primary production required" (PPR) to support a fishery or consumer group of particular interest.
