My research area is freshwater fish biology and ecology. Quite by accident, I have also been doing research on the nesting ecology of sea turtles since 2001. Two sea turtle species, Chelonia mydas (endangered) and Caretta caretta, come to our beach to nest, which is located about 40 km from my university. I did not know much about sea turtles four years ago. In 2001, the Ministry of Environment asked the local government, university, and non-governmental organizations to focus on the Samandag sea turtles, especially their conservation needs. And with this, my studies involving the sea began. When I examined the beach, I saw the extremely poor condition of the sea turtles in the area. I felt that someone should care for the turtles, so I formed a volunteer student group immediately.
