I'd never really planned on being an oceanographer. Having grown up in Seattle, I always loved the sea, but a career in studying the ocean had never occurred to me. It wasn't until college that I saw the possibilities. At the University of Washington, I was majoring in chemistry, and on a whim, took an oceanography course. That course, and a little encouragement from a very convincing advisor, hooked me for life. My specialty is marine geochemistry. I use naturally occurring radio-nuclides to study processes ranging from atmospheric mixing to upper ocean particle export and sediment accumulation on the seafloor.
