Propelled by the improving fortunes of global drilling contractors, and in particular a rash of premium jack-up orders, Singapore's shipyards have been making hay in recent months. John Mueller summarises their recent successes. Major beneficiaries of the recent surge in new orders have been Keppel Corporation subsidiary Keppel Fels and two shipyards within the SembCorp Marine group, PPL and Jurong. AP Moller-Maersk has secured contracts with Keppel Fels (KFels) worth over $615 million to build four jackup rigs of Marine Structure Consultants' CJ 50 design, capable of operating in water depths of up to 350ft and drilling high-pressure wells to 30,000ft. The first rig is expected to be completed in 4Q 2007, the remainder to be delivered in consecutive half-yearly intervals.
