摘要

The major purpose of this article is to analyze the Business Roundtable Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation and offer approaches to operationalize it for the oil, gas, and energy industries, especially by using the Commonsense Principles of Corporate Governance. This latest BR Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation is not such a dramatic break from the past, but rather the next step in a steady retreat from a purely financial approach and an evolution to embrace a stakeholder approach, which is now gaining more prominence, especially with the major economic inequalities in the United States. This stakeholder focus has been long emphasized internationally. Professor Klaus Schwab, who founded the World Economic Forum, drafted the Davos Manifesto in 1973: "the purpose of professional management is to serve clients, shareholders, workers, and employees, as well as societies, and to harmonize the different interests of the stakeholders" (Sorkin 2019).
