In 2018, global oil demand is projected to expand by a steady 1.5% to reach 99.0m bpd. Although current expectations are for relatively firm growth in the global economy this year, the pace of oil demand growth is expected to be limited to an extent by the firmer oil price environment which has emerged over recent months following the realisation of several geopolitical risk factors. Global oil supply is currently expected to grow by 1.8% to 98.2m bpd this year, largely driven by rising output from the US, which is expected to expand by 14% in the full year. Despite this firm growth, the increase in US supply is expected to be offset to an extent by declining output from Venezuela and Iran, the latter as a result of the re-imposition by the US of secondary economic sanctions on the country, although significant uncertainty remains surrounding the extent of any drop in production.
