Global seaborne products trade is projected to grow by a steady pace of around 2% this year, a slight slowdown in the rate of expansion relative to 2017. Combined products imports into the major regions of Asia, Europe and North America are expected to remain steady y-o-y, with the projected net increase in global products trade this year expected to largely be accounted for by growth in imports into other regions, namely the Middle East, Latin America and Africa. Despite expectations that products imports into China, Japan, Korea and India will grow firmly in 2018, imports into several South East Asian countries are expected to decline this year, partly owing to the impact of higher oil prices. Meanwhile, growth in products imports into Latin America (particularly Mexico, where imports are currently projected to expand by 15%) are expected to continue to support some expansion in global products trade this year, largely as a result of the underperformance of refinery sectors in several countries in the region. Although throughput at Mexican refineries has risen in recent months to around 0.8m bpd, this still only represents a utilisation rate of around 50%, and with any further recovery this year reportedly unlikely, Mexican products imports are expected to continue to grow firmly.
