Products exports from North America and Asia are both expected to expand by 3% this year, supported by growth in refinery capacity in both regions. In Asia, this growth is projected to be heavily supported by rising shipments from China, with total Chinese products exports having expanded by over 12% y-o-y in January-May this year according to preliminary data. However, there is notable uncertainty surrounding the volume of further products export quotas likely to be released in the rest of 2018, with the potential that lack of further quota allocations will result in a slowdown in the pace of growth in the full year. Products exports from the Middle East are also expected to rise substantially in 2018, with refinery capacity additions (particularly in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait) anticipated to support firm growth in exports of 8% y-o-y. Meanwhile, products shipments from Europe and Latin America are both anticipated to decline in 2018, with the projected 16% decline in Latin American products exports this year largely reflecting expectations that shipments from Venezuela will continue to fall notably due to the ongoing economic and political crisis in the country, whilst exports from Mexico are also expected to decline as refineries in the country continue to operate at reduced capacity.
