1. In December, VLCC average spot earnings continued to surge and rose by 32% m-o-m to stand at $60,821/day. Overall, earnings in full year 2014 averaged $27,315/day, up 68% y-o-y. Spot earnings were supported last year by tighter market conditions, as well as reduced bunker costs, particularly in the last quarter of 2014. Spot earnings have remained at relatively high levels into January 2015, alongside a significant increase in long-term VLCC timecharter fixtures during the first few weeks of the year, with trading companies keen to capitalise on the contango in the oil price. Reports suggest that up to around 30 vessels had been fixed on long-term timecharters during the first three weeks of the month.
