As of the end of 2014, global refinery capacity stood at 96.8m bpd, a y-o-y increase of 2.2%. This was partially driven by Chinese refinery capacity increasing 6.4% y-o-y to 13.4m bpd. However, OECD European capacity decreased by 1.8% y-o-y in 2014. In 2015, global refinery capacity growth is expected to hit 2.5% y-o-y, taking global capacity to 99.2m bpd. The lion's share of growth is expected to come from Asia, where refinery capacity is projected to rise 3.0% y-o-y to 31.8m bpd. Once again Chinese refinery capacity is expected to be a key growth driver, with an additional 0.5m bpd of capacity expected to come on line with the construction of two refineries of 0.3m bpd and 0.2m bpd capacity. Elsewhere, Middle Eastern refinery capacity is expected to grow 7.5% y-o-y in 2015, with the addition of 0.6m bpd of capacity, on the back of the construction of several refineries across the region. Looking to 2016, global refinery capacity is projected to stand at 101.8m bpd, a y-o-y increase of 2.6%. Middle Eastern refinery capacity is expected to surge 12.8% y-o-y in 2016, largely on the back of the construction of major refinery additions to Saudi and Emirati refinery capacity. As a result, Middle Eastern refinery capacity is expected to constitute approximately 8% of global capacity by the end of 2016.
