The difficulties associated with softening material behaviors - for instance damage models - are well known, notably the loss of ellipticity of the variational problem, which leads to a very strong dependency of the results on the mesh used, rendering these sophisti-cated softening models impossible to use in predicting the behavior of complex structures, especially using the finite elements method.The mesh dependency appears mainly in two guises: (i) pronounced localization of damaged areas in a fine region of the mesh which leads to the structural collapse without consuming energy, (ii) strong influence of the local orientation of elements leading the damaged areas to follow the mesh rather than physics.
