These real-life quotes illustrate the challenges facing professional researchers. No, not everything is available on a cost-effective basis on the Internet, but the Net does offer access to information that simply wasn't available before. Just as information professionals have refined the art of quickly calculating where the best and cheapest online source for a newspaper article or patent document may be, now we must also add to the equation the possibility of finding it on the Internet—and determining whether it's worth getting it there. Is my time worth more than the $4 I save when I retrieve that Washington Post article from its Web page, or is it a net savings for me to download it from Dow Jones News/Retrieval?
