摘要

We have three goals to provide better persistent data storage for modern applications: support multiple storage semantics, support multiple storage implementation policies, and add modularity to shared data. First, operating systems need to support more powerful and more diverse storage models. Microstorage architectures implement several storage models as policies on top of a common mechanism. Application programs can use any storage model to access all data in the system. Second, application programs should be able to customize implementation policies for individual storage models or individual files to improve performance. Microstorage architectures allow storage personalities or application programs to specify disk and cache policies. Third, operating systems should provide modularity for programs that share persistent data. The Data Sharing Toolkit provides attributes that hide private data or reveal public data in files or other data containers.
