摘要

Pricing practices in telecommunications depend on the traffic type and rates differ in terms of different services. In United States, prices are driven and determined by the competition among carriers. According to experts and consumer advocates, there is prevalence of monopoly-like pricing power due to a number of factors including alliances between carriers and handset manufacturers, a lack of portability of handsets across networks, and network effects. The research work has tried to understand how discriminatory pricing impacts carriers, consumers, and the society as a whole. This has been done by comparing two different pricing regimes service pricing-one that allows discrimination based on type of service and, traffic pricing-in which consumer has the right to allocate the purchased traffic between services according to his or her preferences. Thus, the monopolist's tariff design problem assuming that it faces a heterogeneous market using nonlinear pricing is modeled.
