When do new technologies become economically feasible? The case of three-dimensional television

The economic feasibility and diffusion of a new technology has been less understood. While the literature in economics focuses on cumulative production leading to an experience curve as key driver of diffusion, the management literature views the process in terms of technological discontinuity to distinguish between new and old technologies. The research work has tried to analyze the timing of a new technology's technical and economic feasibility using a novel approach that technologies are a system of components where new technological systems often borrow components from existing technological systems. Thus, technological trends in the relevant components analyze the timing of economically feasibility which is available for a wide variety of existing components. The approach has been demonstrated by studying the feasibility of three-dimensional (3D) televisions. The 3D television has key components such as LCDs, ICs, and other electronic components where improvements in these components are independent of the existence or introduction of 3D televisions. The paper describes how the improvements in these components are gradually making 3D television technologically and economically feasible. (62 refs.)
