Inventory pooling is the practice of utilizing a common pool of inventory to satisfy multiple customers. This approach that reduces component and product variety is aimed at increasing the efficiency of supply chain while reducing the cost. The problem is find the minimum inventory level and optimal allocation policy to serve customers with different requirements. Service is measured by the probability of measuring the customer's total demand immediately from the stock (Type 1 service measure). The problem can be restated as finding the mix of inventory level and allocation policy that satisfies a set of current contracts most efficiently. The proposed model disintegrates ordering and allocation policies where the ordering decision is sets the spare parts inventory level and the allocation decision which supplies to customers based on some priority criteria. The analytical characteristics of the optimal inventory level with different service-level requirements are examined using three classes of allocation policies and optimize the inventory level as well as the allocation policy.
