Social network effects on productivity and job security: Evidence from the adoption of a social networking tool

According to mass social network theory, an information-rich network that is low in cohesion and spans structural holes is associated with higher work performance. However, it has also been observed that people who link unconnected groups are exposed to novel information early and can act as hubs to facilitate information flow between otherwise disconnected groups. This has been explored in this research work by examining whether, and if so, how the adoption of an enterprise social media tool within an organization can change social networks over time, and whether there are any economic benefits associated with such a change. Information-rich networks enabled by social media provide two types of information benefits- information diversity and social communication. The paper explores how information diversity and social communication have effects on two types of outcomes namely worker productivity and job security. The hypotheses were tested on the data of a large information technology firm of 8,037 employees over two years using a privacy-preserving social network analysis system that included email, calendar events, and instant messages inside the global information technology firm.
