The paper discusses the case of Trane US, Inc., a brand of IngersoN Rand. Due to recent acquisition of a new product line, the coil center was under increasing pressure to improve header cell throughput and efficiency. A 14-week project was completed with cooperation of the employees who worked in the header cell for coil manufacturing to identify current state value stream map (VSM) to represent both the cell's material and information flow. Based on a multiphase data collection plan, models that support the current and proposed cell systems were developed. Further simulation experiments were constructed for process simulation of the header cell and the results are discussed. (11 refs.)
