摘要

The theory of optical waveguides has for a long time been an excellent example in physics, where theory plays an important forerunning role to experiment. The results from precise numerical experiments are capable of showing very close agreement with experimentally obtained data. Successes of the theory have given rise to a rapid expansion of numerical modelling as a virtual experimental tool. Nowadays, comprehensive advances in numerical tools for solving Maxwell's equations in one form or another stimulate the fast growth of numerical experiments in photonics, the area where classical and quantum properties of light and matter intertwine. This progress has been well reflected by the evolution of the agenda of the International Workshop on Optical Waveguide Theory and Numerical Modelling (OWTNM) over the last decade.
