Abnormal sensing properties of surface plasmon resonance sensor based on photonic crystal fibers

A side-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-based on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with a silver core coated by analyte is studied. Compared with the structure of an analyte hole coated by a nano-metal layer, abnormal sensing properties are observed, in which the y-polarized fundamental mode is more effectively coupled with the surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) mode than with the x-polarized fundamental mode. This structure can also enhance the overlapping area of the core and SPP modes. The characteristics of the refractive-index (RI) sensing are analyzed using the full vector finite-element method in detail. The average wavelength sensitivity can reach 23821 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) with a resolution of 4.2x10(-6) RIU for an analyte RI range of 1.38-1.44. In addition, the amplitude sensitivities depending on the size of the silver core are also analyzed.
