We present results of investigation of transient and stable color centers generated in YAlO_3 and YAlO_3 : Nd crystals under the influence of γ, continuous wave and pulsed UV irradiation in the 30--300 K temperature range. Influence of the color centers on lasing characteristics of YAP--Nd crystals is also studied. The models of color centers in the examined crystals are discussed.
