Fringe analysis is concerned with extracting data from a fringe pattern. A wide range of techniques, such as interferometry or fringe projection, may produce the fringe pattern. The measurand to be extracted is often encoded as the fringe phase. Sometimes the basic analysis is relatively straightforward, e.g. the analysis of a two-dimensional interferogram from an optically smooth surface, but high accuracy requires more sophisticated techniques to reduce the influence of factors such as fringe non-linearity and environmental vibration. Often, the analysis is complicated by the intended application, such as when spatial discontinuities are encountered in the measurand or by the presence of speckle noise. Today, a range of proven techniques exist for the analysis of optical metrology data, with applications in research and industry including engineering, medicine and fine arts. In the 1980s, fringe analysis greatly benefited from the widespread availability of inexpensive computer hardware. The field is currently benefiting from the availability of highspeed digital cameras of accessible cost that are enabling dynamic measurements. The analysis of the resulting three-dimensional data sets is proving a fruitful area of research.
