Oxford Economic Papers has recently published a special issue entitled Women and Work (Volume 61, Number S1, April 2009). Arising from a conference organized under the auspices of the European Union-funded Low-Wage Employment Network (LoWER), the papers discuss the subject of women and low pay. Topics addressed include the choices made by women on childbearing, employment breaks, and jobs. The papers also cover the role of social systems and policy within this context. Social systems and policy environments vary widely across countries and provide a test-bed for examining the responses of women to policy in a large number of European countries.
